Beautiful Herbs ~ that you may not know about
The term “herb” has more than one definition and that allows a vast number of plants from around the world to be classed as HERBS!
Botanists describe an herb as a small, seed bearing plant with fleshy, rather than woody, parts. The term herbaceous comes form this definition. Sadly though that definition rules out the more woody of our known herbs ~ Rosemary , Bay Laurel, Lavender to mention but three! That includes though the BANANA which I personally don’t consider to be a herb.
But a second definition comes to our rescue here ~ plants that are valued for their flavour, fragrance, medicinal and healthful qualities, economic and industrial uses, pesticidal properties, and colouring materials (dyes).
It is within that second definition we discover many plants which are of benefit to all of us. The ones we may not know about or even recognise. It’s those we look at here.
I intend to take a stroll around my own flower beds, and my local garden centres and nurseries to see what I discover. My task is to find an unusual herb to match as many letters of the alphabet as I can ~ an ALPHABET OF HERBS
